Government is to construct about 145,802 'Decent and Low-Income Affordable Housing Units of various types' to address the numerous housing deficits facing workers in public service.
The Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West, Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, announced this in Parliament yesterday.

He was responding to a question posed by the member for Akim Abuakwa North, Prof. Emeritus Samuel K. Amoako, on what steps the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing was taking to provide affordable housing for workers in Ghana.

The aforementioned project, according to the Minister, would be undertaken by both local and foreign investors who have expressed interest to participate in the Government's ongoing National Housing Program which started in 1994, with an objective to provide houses for low and middle income workers in the country.

The Minister stated that a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed to that effect and about six contracting firms would be executing the project. They include; Messrs STX Engineering & Construction Ghana Limited with a project proposal of about US$10 billion from Korea for 200,000 units, with 45% (90,000) of the units earmarked for workers, including the Security services, Messrs Goodwill International Group of Companies are to construct 14,360 affordable houses of various kinds in all the regional capitals of the country; as well as Messrs Agu Resources Limited, in partnership with African-Asian Financial & Properties Holding Company -LLC of USA, is to construct 10,000 units at Nsakina near Amasaman, with support from Government of Ghana.

In addition, Messrs Italconstruct Limited is expected to construct 11,332 housing units while 20,000 housing units are expected to be constructed in all the ten regional capitals of the country by Messrs Swiftforms Systems Limited. The State Housing Company, according to Hon. Bagbin, has also proposed to construct 110 housing units countrywide.

Mr. Bagbin said the various highlighted projects are meant to complement the 100,000 Affordable Housing Project started by the previous government in 2005. Briefing members on the status of the housing project initiated in 2005, Mr. Bagbin said over 5,000 units of the said project are at various stages of construction at six sites; namely Borteyman-Nungua, Kpone near Tema, Asokore-Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Tamale in the Northern Region and some parts of the Upper West Region.
